Session 1:  Outlook 2021—Pandemic Pop

Election Day has come and gone. The equity markets saw the projected blue wave revised to a swift tsunami of gridlock-anticipated optimism. Joe Biden became the president-elect, while Congress maintained its leadership leanings.

Since WWII, there have been nine times that the president of one party surrendered the reins of power to the newly elected president of the opposing party. As a result, investors may wonder how the markets may perform as we close out 2020 and move into the New Year.

During the session, which was by moderated by Director of Equity Research Ken Leon, CFRA Chief Investment Strategist Sam Stovall, CFRA Equity Analysts Matthew Miller and Colin Scarola provided CFRA's U.S. economy and investment outlook for equities and funds for the closing month of 2020 and into 2021.

Topics discussed included:

  • Provided framework for 2021 outlook with “Cyclical Six” investment strategy.
  • Economic recovery scenarios on key industries such as metals, mining, and transportation.
  • Second derivative opportunity for copper, nickel, cobalt, lithium, and rare earth minerals.
  • CFRA’s outlook on climate change implications including new disruptors for growth from electrification and electronic vehicles.
  • Transition away from fossil fuel energy to electrification for trucking and stricter efficiency standards.
  • Identified industrial industries that may benefit from renewable energy.

  • Sam Stovall, Chief Investment Strategist, CFRA
  • Matthew Miller, CFRA Equity Analyst
  • Colin Scarola, CFRA Equity Analyst
