A Lump of Coal? CFRA’s 2020 Holiday Outlook

November 18, 2020 11:00 AM ET | 8:00 AM PT

The holiday season is a crucial time of year for retailers, and in 2020 it could not be more critical. With changes in consumer confidence, shifting spending patterns, and new shopping habits spurred by the ongoing global pandemic and increased focus on e-commerce over in-store shopping, retailers have much to navigate as they look to close the year on a high note during this traditionally peak selling period.

During this session CFRA senior analysts Garrett Nelson, Camilla Yanushevsky, and Tuna Amobi discussed the macro-economic trends in retailing, how Covid-19 changed how and where people shop, and the winners, losers, and companies to watch.

Topics covered include:

  • Trends in shopping patterns and the impact on consumer discretionary and consumer staples sectors
  • Covid-19's impact on potential holiday shopping winners and losers.
  • Digital versus in-store shopping trends this season, including Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and how e-commerce is taking a bigger piece of holiday sales.
  • Influence of big box retailers like Walmart and others who are quickly adapting their strategies to meet the changing needs of the consumer.
  • The Amazon eco-system, what’s new, and what’s different from this e-commerce and digital powerhouse.
