Factors for Advisors, Part 2: A Practitioner's Guide to Implementation

While ETFs constructed based on factors, such as value or momentum, continue to gather assets in 2021, many advisors are still trying to determine how best to use them.

During this interactive panel discussion led by Todd Rosenbluth, CFRA Head of ETF Research, we heard from industry experts about how they use Factor ETFs to build strategic or tactical portfolios, their due diligence process for choosing single or multifactor ETFs, and how they talked to their clients about the role factor ETFs play within a portfolio.

Todd Rosenbluth

Head of ETF and Mutual Fund Research, CFRA

Todd is Head of ETF and Mutual Fund Research at CFRA, leading the firm’s holdings-based research efforts. Todd publishes regular thought leadership content on equity and fixed income products, supports the quantitative fund models, and interacts with clients.  He also serves as a member of CFRA’s Investment Policy Committee. Todd has frequently provided ETF education at Inside ETFs conferences and been quoted in media outlets, such as Barron’s, New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. He also held Senior Director of ETF and Mutual Fund Research for S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Todd holds a BGS in Finance from the University of Michigan and an MBA in Finance from New York University.

   

Mark Barnes, PhD

Head of Investment Research, Americas, FTSE Russell 

Mark Barnes is Head of Investment Research, Americas for FTSE Russell. Dr. Barnes joined FTSE Russell in 2018 and is responsible for applied research and new index development for the United States. In his role in applied research, he is responsible for engaging with clients to explain the FTSE Russell index construction methodology and to work with them to find solutions to their investment problems.

Prior to joining FTSE Russell, Dr. Barnes was a Director and Portfolio Manager within the Multi Asset group at PanAgora Asset Management in Boston. He was responsible for equity strategies within the group including alternative beta, defensive equity and country allocation overlay strategies.

   

Lindsey Dia, CFA

Custom Model Solutions Client Portfolio Manager, BlackRock

Lindsey Dia, CFA, Director is a Client Portfolio Manager for the Custom Model Solutions (CMS) business at BlackRock. CMS is a white labeled, open architecture, custom models platform that enables wealth management and advisory firms to partner with BlackRock in constructing a differentiated suite of model portfolios that marry client specific customizations with BlackRock's IP. 

Prior to joining BlackRock, Lindsey spent the majority of her career in wealth management at JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo. Her areas of focus included multi-asset portfolio design, sales strategy and portfolio and market communications. Lindsey's early experience includes financial planning and analysis at the corporate level for both public and private entities.

   

Bryn Talkington

Managing Partner, Requisite Capital Management

Bryn Talkington is a Managing Partner of Requisite Capital Management. Bryn has more than 25 years of experience in the financial services industry. Her areas of expertise include all facets of Asset Management with a focus on Capital Markets, Alternatives and Investor behavior.

Bryn has spent most of her career working with private clients, foundations and endowments. Prior to Requisite Capital Management, Bryn was an Executive Director at UBS Asset Management where she worked for 15 years. Prior to UBS, she worked at Bear Stearns. Bryn is a contributor on CNBC’s “Fast Money: Halftime Show.”

   

Doug Walters, CFA

Chief Investment Officer, Strategic Financial Services

Doug serves as the senior investment professional at Strategic Financial Services, Inc., an independent RIA managing over $1.7 billion in assets. He brings a logical, practical, and pragmatic approach, which stems from his background in engineering. The result is an evidence-based investment management process driven by science, not speculation. He is charged with leading the Investment Committee and overseeing the company’s centralized financial planning operations. In addition, Doug serves on Strategic’s Leadership Team.

Doug has over twenty years of industry experience. He brings to Strategic a diverse background in both quantitative and fundamental equity research, including 13 years at Deutsche Bank AG in London and Deutsche Bank Securities, Inc. in New York City where he held a variety of positions including Director, CROCI (Cash Return on Capital Invested) Investment Strategy & Valuation. He has an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management, an MS in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, and is a CFA Charterholder.
